Fame: The Illusion and the Reality
In her book, ³In the Shadow of Fame: A Memoir by the Daughter of Erik Erikson², the author explores the nature of fame from a psychoanalytic perspective. The glorification of fame is viewed as a culturally supported system of illusion in which both the famous and their admirers participate. The drive to become famous and the need to idealize the famous are interrelated psychopathologies that have become particularly prominent in American life today. The connection between a certain kind of early childhood trauma and the attempt to heal childhood wounds through the achievement of celebrity will be discussed.
Speaker: Sue Erikson Bloland, CSW
Location: Adelphi University, Alumni House, 158 Cambridge Avenue, Garden City.
Sue Erikson Bloland, CSW is a psychotherapist in private practice and is a faculty member of the Manhattan Institute for Psychoanalysis. She is the author of a memoir, ³In the Shadow of Fame², and has published articles in The Atlantic Monthly and in Psychoanalytic Dialogues.
