Action Alert! Medicare Payment at Risk

Campus Representatives – Please forward this action alert to your classmates and colleagues.

APAGS Members and/or Psychology Graduate Students:

Please take action on this alert by emailing your Congressional delegates about this important issue!

Why is this important? Medicare is an important funder of psychotherapy services. In addition, many insurance companies look to Medicare reimbursement rates as indication of how to fund various health services. If these Medicare cuts are implemented, it will lower payments to psychological providers who accept Medicare (including some of your supervisors or agencies you may intern/extern for), and may lead to lower reimbursements by other stakeholders.

Why do I need to act as a graduate student? While you may not benefit immediately from this action, the proposed cuts/payment freeze may last up to 10 years (3 years of cuts, 7 years of a payment freeze). If you are in graduate school now, these cuts could affect you as you get licensed and go into practice.

Do I need to act if I’m not a clinical/counseling/school student, or not intending to go into practice? Yes, you should! Advocacy efforts benefit from more contacts to Congress! While this alert may be practice oriented, the next one may be related to science funding, or funding educational efforts, or social justice/public interest issues, and your practice colleagues will be counted on to help out with those as well. Psychology benefits when all those interested in psychology support issues that may benefit others in the field.

I don’t have a lot of time to do this. How long does it take? Literally, it can take one minute. Click on the link where it says “Click here”, enter your address (including zip code) and this will bring up your representative and senators. Add your contact info to the name, and if you want to, edit the letter (but you don’t have to!). Once you are satisfied with the letter, click send, and it will go to your congressional delegates! It can take as little as one minute! If you live in a zip code that is split between two districts, you will need your ZIP + 4 to identify your district and representative.

Support the Employment Non-Discrimination Act

The Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) of 2011 has been introduced in the House and Senate. ENDA prohibits discrimination in the workplace based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Please contact your congresspersons today and ask them to support this important issue!

Contact your senators via this link:

http://capwiz.com/apapolicy/issues/alert/?alertid=47098506

Contact your representative via this link:

http://capwiz.com/apapolicy/issues/alert/?alertid=47117501

It’s so easy to participate in advocacy!

Click on the links, provide your zip code.

CapWiz, the online program, will automatically identify your representative or senators based on your zip code (sometimes it will need the +4 digits of the zip code).

You’ll get on a page that asks for more personal information (your address, etc) and has a prepopulated letter, and a section of the letter you can edit. Feel free to send the letter as is, or add personal information as you want. Legislators do respond positively to personal anecdotes. If your research applies to this topic, you could discuss that in this section as well.

Click “Send Message” – and your message is off to the US Capitol! – It’s as easy as that!!!

After you send your message, you can forward the action alert to your friends and colleagues via CapWiz.
