I am currently working with the New York State Office of Mental Health as a Psychiatric Examiner and Clinical Program Development Consultant. This position is with the New York State Office of Mental Health, Division of Forensic Services-Bureau of Sex Offender Evaluation and Treatment (BSOET) in Albany, NY. BSOET is the hub of the risk assessment and treatment of New York State’s Sex Offender Civil Commitment Law. BSOET has evaluated nearly 4000 sexual offenders who have been released by the NYS Department of Corrections since April of 2007. At this time, myself and my colleagues (Dr. Naomi Freeman, Jeffery Sandler, and Dr. Christine Rackley)  are  constructing a wide scale research project on sexual offender risk assessment. This project will include a significant degree of comprehensive record reviews to mine data from paper files and other electronic resources in order to develop the requisite database for this research project. The breadth of the data is such that the project is likely to take several years to accomplish fully. We are also looking at a long follow-up time. The primary task of a research volunteer would be to collect data and help us develop this database. However, an added benefit of this opportunity will be to have access to numerous data sets from which dissertation topics could be developed. It should also be noted that this opportunity will provide access to some of the most cutting edge research on sex offender risk assessment and treatment,  and will be under the supervision of numerous clinicians and administrators at the  forefront of New York State’s Forensic Mental Health Services. This would require the person to be in the Albany area on somewhat of a regular basis and this would be strictly voluntary (there are currently no funds available for stipends or travel reimbursement – I’m still working on this part). However the benefits of having access to data for dissertation purposes may be worth the time, effort and travel.
