NEURON_brochure_1011[1]The Northeast Under/graduate Research on Neuroscience is having a wonderful conference this November 6th at nearby Quinnipiac University. N.E.U.R.O.N. has first-rate invited speakers. For example, a talk presented by Robert Sapolsky (Stanford) a few years ago was an amazing experience for our faculty and students alike. The talks are presented at a level that is easily comprehended by non-neuroscientists. N.E.U.R.O.N. is an opportunity for graduate and undergraduate students to learn what a neuroscience conference is all about, even if they are not going into the field. Students can also present their data at a poster session, if they have something related to neuroscience. Poster submissions can be sent in up to one week in advance and still be included in the official program. The submission info is in the attached pdf. Would you please pass this information along to students who may be interested? We might be able to car pool, as it has worked out well in the past.

About the Presentation
A heart-centered approach to psychotherapy advocates that our expressions of non-sexual, non-romantic love for our patients are a core ingredient in effective psychotherapy. We entered this profession with a compassionate desire to alleviate human suffering, yet our training focused on theories, techniques and maintaining professional distance. How can we be both professionals and a compassionate loving presence? How do we maintain an open-hearted presence when we are in the energy field of so much suffering hour after hour, day after day for years? Why are we good at taking care of others and not good at taking care of ourselves? What are effective pathways of recharging our psychological batteries outside of sessions? How can we engage our big hearts during sessions so that our small hearts of ordinary consciousness do not get overwhelmed by the amount of pain? These questions will be addressed in the presentation.
Participants Will Learn:
1) To define what is meant by heart-centered psychotherapy.
2) To identify the reasons why therapists do not take good care of themselves.
3) To describe pathways of recharging our psychological batteries.
4) To discuss how to maintain a compassionate presence during sessions.

ABOUT THE PRESENTATION

What do you imagine when you think about a lemon? The bright color, bumpy skin, round feel or the sharp and sweet taste? How it flavors your summer iced tea or how grandma use to bring that lemon to perfection in her lemon meringue pies? Now what if you slowly taste that same lemon and let all cognitions go? You experience the lemon directly and without the interference of associations, memories and other life experiences. Come and smell the roses, taste your breath for the first time and see why mindfulness practice is changing the face of our profession and our world.

This workshop is largely experiential in nature and not a lecture.

Participants are asked to bring a yoga mat and perhaps a pillow as we will spend most of the time on the floor.

Participants Will Be Able To:

1. Explain the historical roots of mindfulness and the role it plays in enhancing therapeutic practices today.

2. Describe the differences between the mental states of “doing mind” and “being mind”.

3. Define the essential elements of a mindfulness practice.

4. Explain how meditation differs from other self-regulation systems such as progressive muscle relaxation.

5. Contrast formal and informal meditation practices.

6. Participate in a variety of live mindfulness meditation practices such as an eating meditation, a

breathing meditation and a body scan.

7. Access multiple online mindfulness practice resources and professional training venues for further study.

8. Plan and implement a daily meditation practice that fits into his/her own unique lifestyle.
