SMART Presentation: Wednesday, 11/2 at 12:30

SMART presentation “The importance of assessing culture and language proficiency in Latinos for psychotherapy and testing” this Wednesday.

The presentation will focus on the issues of acculturation, Latino values, and levels of bilingualism will be covered as well as APA Ethical Guidelines to consider when working with culturally and linguistically different populations.

The speaker, Dr. Lorna Myers, received her doctorate in psychology with a concentration in neuropsychology from CUNY in 1999. She is currently the director of clinical neuropsychology at the Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group, as well as the Director of Psychological Non Epileptic Seizure Treatment Program. Dr. Myers was the clinical supervisor of psychological testing for LIU’s PsyD program from 2003-2005, and was an adjunct professor here from 2004-2005. Her ongoing research projects focus on epilepsy, psychogenic non-epileptic seizures, and Test of Memory Malingering in Hispanic, Spanish-speaking patients with corroborated neurological disorders.

Eligibility Requirements
All awardees must be;a U.S. citizen at time of application,18 years of age or older as of August 1, 2012,able to participate in summer internships at DoD laboratories,willing to accept post-graduate employment with the DoD,a student in good standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (as calculated by the SMART application) and,pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in one of the disciplines listed on the About SMART page.

of identity in regards to academic and social aspects of our program.

Fall Semester Meeting Times and Topics

September 22 – Screening of the film “Very Young Girls,” an exposé of
the commercial sexual exploitation of girls in NYC, and the efforts by
one agency, Girls Educational and Mentoring Services’ (GEMS) to help
them.

October 7 – SMART members Adjoa Osei and Surrenca Albert participated
in the ethnic studies panel at C.W. Post, Long Island University, as
part of Ethnic Studies Week.

The third SMART meeting at C.W. Post will be held on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at 12:30 p.m. in the large conference room in Building #2. Dr. Andres Adams, Clinical Assistant Director of Psychiatry of the Brooklyn Alzheimer’s Disease Assistance Center, will discuss the topic, “Bridging the Cultural Divide: Becoming a Culturally Competent Clinical Psychologist.”  He will explain how to work as a psychologist in a culturally competent/multilingual manner.  Dr. Adams will underscore the importance of these skills in relation to meeting the needs of a growing diverse population and in securing future employmentThe third SMART meeting at C.W.  WELCOME LETTER AND EVENT SCHEDULE FOR SMART!!! The SMART leadership team would like to thank all the students that came to the Pot-Luck Luncheon/screening of Dark Days on September 16th and the screening and discussion of Color of Fear, moderated by Dr. Carol Mackauf on October 14th. We have had quite a turnout for our first two events! He has an Ed.D in Counseling Psychology and Adult Education, a M.S.W. in Bilingual Clinical Social Work, and a Professional Diploma in Counseling Psychology. We also wanted to let you know about all the other exciting SMART events that are planned for this school year.
